Books for mother tongue education

Agartala, 21 February 2013: International Mother Language Day has been celebrated globally every year on 21 February since 1999. It was in 21 March 1948 the people of present day Bangladesh were imposed Urdu language as the only official language by Governor General of Pakistan. Following which the Bengali speaking people of present Bangladesh took out the provincial strike in 21 Feb 1952 and some students were killed in a police firing. To commemorate the Day the UNESCO declared the 21 February as International Mother Language Day in 1999.

Tripura shares a common border with Bangladesh and massive gathering was organised at international border at Akhura, Agartala to commemorate the day. Several dignitaries from both the countries participated in the intellectual debate to mark respect and tribute to the Language Martyr of 21 February.

This is year the theme selected by UN on Language Day is "Books for mother tongue education".

Books are the pillars of knowledge societies and essential for promoting freedom of expression and education for all."
