Harder Times to come   [6/24/2011]

I have always been proud to be Tripuri. I honestly feel any stranger whosoever comes to Tripura is sure to fall in love with its beautiful landscapes and dazzled nature. The little hillocks and its beauty entices and gives me solace. Such is my Land Tripura.

The pride and glory is short rather weighed by fears. Looking at my son who is learning to cope with the world, I have many fears. This fear is utterly concerned with my Tripura. If he happened to ask me, which for sure he will, the meaning of any word in kokborok, how do I answer because we already lost many Kokborok vocabularies. This fear has haunted me many a times and made me to think deeply. I doubt any Tripuri will be able to speak pure Kokborok in their daily usage. This has been the result of coming in close with Bengalees. The virgin language has been raped drawing it to the brink of abolishment. Let me cite one example which had made me to reflect deeply. Once Fr.Pulinthanath Joseph, the award winning director of "Mathia" and "Yarwmg", asked me the meaning of "Divine" in kokborok. Divine means holy in simpler word, which would have been "Kwthar" in Kokborok. But the word "Holy" and "Divine" is very different in wider sense. We humans can be kwthar but not divine, because only God can be Divine. So, in Kokborok we have already lost the meaning of divine. I failed to give Fr.P.J the exact meaning of Divine in Kokborok. There might have been but due to the lack of usage we lost it. Sometimes we fail to understand our very own Kokborok. Like my friends once asked the meaning of my sons name, "Ayuk". Only when I told him the meaning was "Amar" did he understand it. Such is the state of Kokborok today. Whenever the Kokborok news was or is aired through All India Radio, we understand only partially because most of the deeper meanings we dont understand especially the numerical. We take pleasure in talking great things on many issues like political, economical and social. But we do fail to see this si .........

The present scenario of Tripuri Society   [11/12/2010]

Change is an ever present phenomenon everywhere. Change is ever present in the world because change is the law of nature. Nothing is static. Change for the better or the worse is always a debatable issue. Our society has also seen many changes. From the primitive the compact homogeneous society we had reached to the present situations of complexities. The Tripuri society is one of the oldest races in the world ruled by 184 kings. It had seen the glorious past of the monarchy and the boon of the democracy. Since 15th October 1949, the merge of Tripura with the mainland India, it has and still undergoing tremendous changes culturally, socially, politically, linguistically etc. The change is too drastic to differentiate ours and others. The changing trend of our society is leading us to lose our own very identity. Our very own social nature is leading us to the brink of destructions of our social values. We know it clearly but dont seem to realize it.

The youngsters of today are too timid to reason with the changing time. They fall an easy prey to modernization as I would call it. The air of modernization is so tempting to resist. The showoff the belly with a tattoo on it is a pride. The demand for bike and the consequent threat of suicide on refusal is a prestige for the youngsters of today. The hard earned money of parents is being wasted recklessly on party; a party of love, romance and merrymaking. The youngsters in general are much into drugs. Yes, its true! The day after any occasion or festivity, if you happen to go around to the site you are sure to find the empty packets of dendrite and empty bottles of liquor. Who is to be blamed, the pampering children or the obliging parents?

What we actually lacked is social control. The purpose of social control is to exercise control over people in an effective manner. Do we actually have social control in our society or pretending to have one? The past society did have uniformity and solidarity, with well ma .........
