Mother tongue language is something that is attached deep withing our soul and heart. It is rather an emotional attachment that we have when it comes to Mother tongue. And what more than speaking and dreaming in mother tongue. Kokborok being my Mother tongue, is the tongue that taught me my first syllable in life.

When it comes to Kokborok what I am forced to visualize is just 'confusion', confusion about script, confusion about spelling, confusion about speakers identity and confusion about self. And it is this confusion that keeps me awake about the happenings around Kokborok.

Kokborok is the Mother tongue for more than a million of speakers around the world. The language for which some have given life, the language for which some have dedicated their foyful life. The language that they have dreamt about, the language that they have wanted to speak at home, at market, at office and at sleep.

It sounds so musical and heart bound no joy when you hear Kokborok sounds in Shillong, Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad and else where. For a moment you forget what you are doing and listen to the incoming melody of Kokborok sound and try to trace its root and speak a few words with. Such is the emotional attachment we have in mother tongue.

Kokborok is officially recognized as the state language of Tripura since 1979. Since then we have seen faces of Kokborok in different hands in Tripura. Kokborok was introduced in the elementary schools and gradually to colleges. But what was missing was the scientific approaches that the government lack in developing Kokborok. Today Kokborok has become a political tool for the politician, a tool to attain the political score between arch-rivals.

It is found that off the many sanctioned schools to provide Kokborok as subjects only one schools is reported functioning. Recently with the introduction of Kokborok as an elective subject in General Degree Colleges it gain momentum. But even their it is not without controversy. Subject provided with syllabus that has no particular books to follow and with no regular Kokborok faculties it is even making harder for the language to survive in the college. But the enthusiasm of the Kokborok students to study their language is note worthy and is the only reason that Kokborok is surviving in collages despite all odds.

This is year's theme for International Mothers Language Day is "Book for mother tongue education". Have a achieved this or are our leaders helped us in achieving this is question one should ask to the policy maker whom we vote them to power and elect them to be our leader. Are our Government listening?
